April Ross

April Ross was one of only a few women beach volleyball players who have won medals during multiple Olympics. She is set to compete in Tokyo for her 3rd Olympic medal alongside Alix Klineman, who is a first time Olympian. Ross aims to earn an Olympic the first medal of gold, but she is also aiming to win greater. There is a chance that it is her last chance, at 39 years old. But she's convinced that the top awards are within reach. Ross declared on NBC Boston: "If we do our best and even playing well I believe we can win the gold medal." Then I will also take the chance to have luck. Ross was a Californian born in Costa Mesa, California in 1982. She grew up in Costa Mesa along with her parents and younger sister. Ross played in numerous activities while at Newport Harbor High School. She was a basketball player and also ran track, in addition to her indoor volleyball exploits as a prep athlete. In her final game she was clearly the standout. The college bio says that she was an outside hitter middle blocker, as well as a setter throughout her volleyball time at high school. Her achievements were rewarded in 1999 when she was named Gatorade's National Circle of Champions Player of the Year. Also, in 2000 she was awarded the Orange County Athlete of the Yr for volleyball. Ross is playing with Klineman since 2017 but her beach game had been established long before the year. She has been able to win multiple tournaments, including one with an iconic volleyball player. Jennifer Kessy was her partner during six years from 2007 to 2013. She also coached Klineman and herself. Alongside Kessy Ross, she was a major force in the world circuit, winning a world title in 2009. They eventually won an Olympic silver medal during the 2012 Olympic Games in London. They were defeated for the gold medal by the legendary duo comprising Misty and Kerri Walsh (Jennings). Ross Jennings was Walsh Jennings partner in fate when Maytreanor retired. They both won bronze medals in beach volleyball for the Rio Olympics in the year 2016. Ross began her college professional career playing for the Trojans of USC following graduation from high school. This was years before Ross made her debut on the beach and became a professional. The Trojans had a great run for Ross at the university. In her first year at the school, 2000 saw her earn the Pac-10 as well as NCAA Freshman's of the Year awards and be an All-American. She was also one of the key players to help the Trojans make it to the Final Four. Her personal life was tense after a devastating loss in her sophomore, but was still able to achieve the All-American title. During her final two seasons as a member of the Trojans in the program the team was led to victory by winning consecutive national championships. In 2003-04, Ross was named the top collegiate female volleyball player in America through the Honda Sports Award. Ross was a student of international relations at USC. Margie Ross was never able to watch her daughter's rise to beach volleyball fame. Ross suffered the loss of her mother to breast cancer in 2001. Ross was then a sophomore. She has kept her parents close to her the heart. Margie remains a source of inspiration, both off and on at the beach.
